Local author Garry Honey is coming to Winchester City Museum to talk about four of Wessex's most influential royal women.

Local author Garry Honey is coming to Winchester City Museum to talk about four of Wessex’s most influential royal women.

From King Alfred’s daughter Aethelflaed to the Norman queen Mathilda, Garry will discuss the impact that these women had on history for this Women’s History Month. Based on his most recent release, Wessex Women of Winchester.

A local resident with a passion for history, this is a story of four Anglo-Saxon queens from four centuries when Winchester was a seat of power. From King Alfred’s daughter, Aethelflaed through Elfrida the wife of King Edgar the peaceful, to Emma of Normandy wife of King Canute, and to Matilda of Anjou daughter of Henry I and mother of Henry II. This is a story of four remarkable women of Wessex.

This short pocket history not only bridges 400 years between the Winchester of King Alfred and that of the Plantagenet dynasty, but it demonstrates the courage and determination of women who helped create England from uniting Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria.
